Gloves and mittensWhat to wear on the trailI really liked my "Glo-Mitts." They are Windbloc fleece fingerless gloves with mitten covers for the finger tips. With the covers, they are as good as mittens but you can flip the mitten cover back and expose your fingertips when you need their dexterity. Also, being able to flip the fingertips back helps regulate heat when it's too cold to go without gloves but too warm to wear mittens. They are also water resistant but not waterproof. If you look for glo-mitts, I suggest you look at backcountry outfitters. Many other stores have carry a wool/knit version where the mitten cover flips back off the fingertips but not the thumb. I think Glo-mitts are useless if you can't flip the thumb part back. REI and EMS both carry Windbloc versions where you can also flip the thumb back. I started the trail with liners, Glo-mitts, and overmitts. When it started getting warm, I sent the liners and overmitts home but kept the Glo-mitts for a while longer. Then I sent those home and retrieved them when I got to Glencliff, NH. |
