[pct-l] Desert Triple Crown WAS Qudaruple Crown?

There's also the work-in-progress on the California Coastal Trail, beach and street walking in southern California, more back-country seaside hiking in the north.

Mags,

    I love that idea!

I've added mileages to your posting below;  interestingly they're all
very close in length. A bit more info, based on my  limited knowledge follows:
AZT almost "officially" finished & has a guidebook.
HTofficially finished & has a guidebook; definitely the "gnarliest", as
the book says expect 8 mi/dy.
GET officially finished & has an online guidebook; also has an  excellent
set of maps on CD for $15.

What I tell people about the HT, is that in places  it's something
like, "you're walking in a river, counting canyons on your  left, as you have to
sorta rock scramble up the 6th canyon to a plateau. BTW,  there are no
trail angels; no paved roads, except once every hundred miles; no  water
reports, except info from 1-3 years ago; no other hikers; and you'll have  to spend
days driving food & water caches in on bad roads.

    There is also a long S-N Desert Trail, E of the PCT  & W of the CDT;
I've watched it for 25 years, but it's never been finished,  stalled in S OR
for at least 20 years going N. I don't know if the parts in  S NV tie into
the CA parts, and the latter are done by a separate  organization. Last year,
I sent 2 emails to the DT Association asking where to  find info on the CA
parts; both went unanswered. I was a "member" much  of that time, but have
let it lapse; buried in my old newsletters is info on the  CA parts. The guide
pamphlets I do have (like fold-out maps) use landmark  photos as guides, so
you pick your own route and spread out impact on  the desert. This trail
would be the best S-N candidate for a 2,000  mi Quadruple Crown, but they'd
have to get their trail completed; perhaps a  third of it is non-existent.

God willing I'll finish the PCT in 2009, then the  CDT by 2013, and
then consider myself ready for the HT. I'll be 70 then, so I'll  probably only
hike it with someone else. In the intervening years I hope to  start picking
up sections of the AZT & GET.
