Told ya we were gonna hike ? so we are. My daughter got married on
Saturday
so now we?re free to go play again. Tomorrow night we?ll be in Big Bear, CA
and
Wednesday we?ll start hiking north on the PCT. Won?t start at Campo (the
border)
cause it?s too late in the season to be starting that much desert. Big Bear
is about
300 miles north (trail miles, that is) north of the border.

This is a test for the knee. We?ll see how far we get, but the objective is
Canada by
Christmas. But I won?t tell you how wrong that statement is.

In any case, this is plan A. Yes ? we also have Plans B & C. After all, I
DID do
contingency planning for spacecraft programs for a long, long time and it?s
a hard
habit to break.

We?ll let you know about the next step ? when it?s history.

Walk softly,
Jim

I did it yesterday and there's essentially no snow. ?A couple of
piles to walk over between Tahquitz peak trail and Saddle Junction.
Thank goodness, the hike up left me feeling drained as it is.

Highway (74) and Saddle Junction. Is there still snow left? How much? If I
walk up Devil's Slide and then head south from the junction, are there any
adverse trail conditions that I will encounter?

The writings have continued on many markers, all the way to Idyllwild.
They are still only on one type of marker, the flexible, rust colored
ones with 'PCT' against a yellow background.

Amanda,
The riders name is Susan Bates. She and her husband, Burton, have come out
from Arkansas.
I have been assisting her on her thru ride mostly via e-mail. She called me
shortly after the accident and again this morning. Her horse is "pretty
scratched up but otherwise seems to be OK".
She had come around a corner and came to a very large down tree. The trail
was very narrow. She first tried to back him up. When that did'nt work she
tried to turn him around and he slipped down on the loose scree - to a wide
ledge, fortunately. She found a place where she thought she could get him
back up. That did not work either as he went over backwards. His saddle and
saddlebags apparently cushioned his fall and saved him from possible serious
injury. She left a note by him and went for help. Along came 10 hikers, one
of them a very experienced horseman from Italy. Working together they made?a
route back to the trail.
Susan,Burton, and the horse "Port",are now at a Forest Service Camp called
Heart Bar and will rest Port for 2 or 3 days and then trailer down to have a
Veterinarian check out Port.

Before checking it out, I 'passed it on' to the 2009 group...
Looking at AsABat's water report after posting, "Highlander" reported
sometime today (5/11) that as of 5/9/09, the small stream at 332.8 was
"running well"...
I'll check first next time!! ;-) AsABat is on the ball and taking care
of business as usual! (Thanks!)

Happy trails!!!

Nah, I just updated that from w*rk today when I saw Iceaxe's post. I
thought it worth getting the word out quickly. Not sure why no water was
reported a couple weeks ago, but it's possible the source for that
stream hadn't surfaced yet through the winter silt. Just guessing.

Susan and another rider, Janice, were very helpful and kind to me as I
struggled up the trail to lower Morris Meadow. They gave my pack a "ride"
for about a mile. One of their horses "pulled" me along as I held on to its
tail. It was a very funny picture! Sorry to hear about her troubles.

John,

I only have two of your posts on my computer, this one and one on
05/10/2009. Both read fine on my Apple Mac using Thunderbird email client.

From what you describe my guess is that your email program you are
using to read the emails is using the wrong character encoding setting
to decode (convert) the actual email message into what is displayed on
your screen.

I sometimes have a similar problem with weird characters in someone's
email and I change the character encoding setting to view that message
and I get a more readable text with fewer weird characters. Since I
don't know what email program are using and very little about the other
programs, this is about all the help I can provide. Try looking thru
your email program menus and see if there is an item for character
encoding. Try switching between "Western" and "Unicode" to view the
message and see if this helps.
