[pct-l] Entry to Canada permit

As of January 31, 2008 the U.S. requires all people traveling into the U.S.
from Mexico or Canada to present identification and proof of citizenship.
So, unfortunately, a passport is (sort of) needed to get back into the U.S.
If it's too late for you to get one before leaving, here are some
alternative options I found:

1) According to:
http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/travel/vacation/ready_set_go/land_travel/docs/whti_notification_tearsheet.ctt/whti_notification_tearsheet.pdf

For _land travel_ between Canada and US, if you don't have a passport, you
can technically get back into the states by providing two alternative
documents: BOTH proof of I.D. (***driver's license) AND proof of citizenship
(***original birth certificate).

2) I've heard some hikers who don't want to obtain a passport and are
willing to take the risk simply turn around in Manning Park and hike
southbound right back into the U.S. on the trail. With this method, you'd
have to hike a few days before hitting a town.

I don't know what to do about the Canada Entry form if you don't have a
passport number, though. Maybe someone else can give some insight on that...
I've heard from others that nobody at the border is really interested in
that Canada Entry form anyway, but I don't have personal experience with
this.

Good luck,
Julian
