There was also a time when as a Conference we built on common ground, we sort
consensus because we needed to draw together on those things we shared in
common. In doing so we tried to minimize divisive issues.

The Conservancy is introducing divisive issues. such as "Gun control."

Why?

See following and note that the two WEB sites listed are anti-gun, as is the
ATC draft position :

Subject: Draft ATC response to USDI firearms rule

Dear Stewardship Council, Regional Partnership Committee Chairs, and Staff:

Attached, as promised at our early May council meeting, is a DRAFT ATC
position statement responsive to the US Department of Interior's proposal to
change NPS and Fish & Wildlife Service regulations to allow carrying of
concealed firearms in national parks and wildlife refuges. Also attached is
the Federal Register notification.

Deadline for public comment is June 30, 2008. If you have input for ATC's
position, please respond to me by June 13th if possible, and no later than
June 20th. ATC welcomes and encourages clubs and individuals to comment as
well.

For additional background, please visit the Assoc. of National Park Rangers:
http://www.anpr.org/guns_in_parks.htm or the National Parks and Conservation
Association website at http://www.npca.org/keep_parks_safe/ or the web more
generally.

One last comment on the subject of who we as the trail community are, as I see
it. I've always thought that the ATC name change in reality changed the focus
of who we are. I could be a part of a Conference. I'm not a part of the
Conservancy. We have become who the people in the office thought we should
be, not who we actually were and would like to be again. I don't see the word
Conservancy saying anything about us. It's too nebulous. The Conference took
in all the maintaining clubs, our opinions, the guys on the ground hiking,
etc. It meant that we all had a part in what was happening. I no longer have
that feeling. Instead of working together to make things happen, "we" are now
too busy "conserving" the status quo. I don't see it as a living, breathing,
growing entity anymore. The magazine is just an outward reminder of the
difference.
