The staff is not elected they are hired, other than the Executive Director
they are hired by other staff depending on their level. The Executive
Director is hired by the Board. The Board does not control any of the staff
other than the ED, although they could make suggestions if they felt some
staff member was a serious impediment. I suspect most of the complaints are
about staff and not the board as I doubt if more than an handful of the
members of this list even know who they are (unless they read the masthead
of ATJ).

The Board is elected by ALL the members that show up at the biennial
meeting. Become a member and you can vote. However, a word of warning,
almost all non-profits have a nominating committee that puts up a slate and
that slate is almost invariably elected. There are provisions for petitions
but that is a hard road. ATC is no different than 90% of the other
non-profits out there in terms of governance.

There is a difference between the old board and the new board. The old board
was highly effected by the clubs and regions. This did not guarantee a good
mix of skills needed to govern an organization. It tended to be older and
frequently people who came up through the maintenance ranks. The current
board recruits for specific skills, e.g. financial people, deep pockets or
fundraising skills, ecologists, land specialists, lawyers, etc. This results
in a board that should be able to give good advice on the issues facing us.

This may be a stupid question but how do these people get elected to these
positions?
