FWIW  This is happening in SWVA -- both in AT-speak and in common usage around 
here.

In AT-speak for NOBOs Central VA starts at the New River Rt 460 bridge and 
ends at Rockfish Gap.

The shooting was in the Dismal area near the Bland/Giles line.

What people are being shuttled around is the northern end if the AT SWVA 
segment to the beginning of the Central VA segment.

My hiking partner and her husband are out there in that area right now.  This 
is Not a good time to be in Central VA.  a'bear
