I started my hike wearing shorts. As the weather warmed up I began
having problems with hiker rash. I wore wicking underwear beneath my
shorts so I tried going without underwear. I didn't work. So I
experimented wearing just the wicking underwear without shorts and it
worked great but caused some embarrassing moments. Baltimore Jack
was working in Harpers Ferry at the Outfitters when I finally found a
kilt that would fit. Jack sold me the Mountain Hardwear Kilt which I
wore rather subconsciously as I left town. I was particularly
concerned about the roofers across the street as I walked down from
the ATC center, but they must have seen just about any conceivable
sight working in HP. The kilt worked great over my wicking
undershorts. I tried it commando style but that was very
uncomfortable to me. On very hot days I still could drench all of my
clothing including the kilt but I did not get another rash. I wore
the kilt when I climbed Katahdin to end my hike on October 25, 2004.
I did have a pair of long underwear on beneath the kilt because there
was snow on the ground when I left Katahdin Stream Camp Ground.
Actually, some days I wore my long pants beneath the kilt in the
morning so that it would be easy to just remove the pants as the day
warmed up. The kilt no longer fits me. I had lost a lot of weight
before I purchased the kilt. And as most of us know, your metabolism
can change dramatically from a long distance hike. I lost 35 lbs
hiking but then put on 40 lbs. My doctor told me not to worry that I
have created additional muscle mass, but it would be cool to still
fit into that kilt.
My kilt had pockets, extra snaps and buckles to keep it from falling
off and it had a snap system at the bottom - hem - that you could use
for times when modesty would be appropriate. I was reminded more
than once to cross my legs. The only problem I had with my kilt was
I thought it was a little too long. It would catch on my knees when
I was climbing.
