I have just recently done a lot of research on that
topic and decided to buy a Nokia N95.
It is not as "cool" as the iphone, but has a lot of
advantages over the iphone for a thruhiker. I have
ordered it, but haven't received it yet, so I can just
tell you from the product description:

- Much better camera (5 Megapixel and flash) than the
iphone (2 Megapixel and no flash)
- Nokia doesn't depend on itunes for dealing with mp3
music
- Nokia has a GPS, iphone doesn't.
- Nokia has radio, iphone doesn't 
- Nokia is cheaper (at least on the German market)
- Nokia has a changeable battery, iphone built-in
battery only
- Nokia N95 (not the N95 8GB) can be used with
micro-SD cards, iphone does not have that feature but
has  16 GB. 

There is a new version of the Nokia called N96 with 16
GB memory and micro-SD cards, but this will only
available later this year.

The only drawback of the Nokia is that it is not as
easy to understand as the iphone, which is extremely
user friendly. 

I decided for the Nokia because it will save me a lot
of weight: I will just carry the Nokia and don't need
an extra camera and MP3 player any more.
