How far off I-77 do you want to go?
Lot's of choices in the area.
The nearest to I-77 by road access are Chestnut Knob Shelter, Jenkins
Shelter, and Helvely's Mill Shelter.
The AT crosses I-77 between Bastian and Bland.
Walker Gap (rather rough road for the last 200-300 yards) is about 30 miles
and 45 minutes SW of exit 58.
>From Walker Gap to Chestnut Knob Shelter is about 1.5 miles with a 1000 foot
climb. Chestnut Knob Shelter is a four wall shelter and there is a great
view. It is a dry shelter, so carry water. There is a spring at Walker Gap
and another one about 1.5 miles SOBO of the shelter. However, it is dry here
and I haven't checked them lately. They could very well be dry by now.
The 623 trailhead is also about 30 miles and 45 minutes SW of exit 58
(different fork out of Burkes Garden).
Jenkins Shelter is about 3.8 mile and 1500 feet down hill NOBO of the parking
at the county 623 trail head (it is also about 4.6 SOBO of the parking at the
615 trail head, which you can reach from exit 52, with less elevation change.
Farther NOBO you have Helvely's Mill Shelter about 1.5 miles from the parking
at the 612 trail head.
I love Chestnut Knob

Subject: [at-l] AT / I-77 area
Just back from ten days of sailing on Lake Huron. It was great, thanks for
asking. Oh, wait, you didn't, did you? That's okay, I won't bore you with
stories about the cool water, nice breezes and incredible sunrises and
sunsets.
But now the fambly wants to go down to the Charleston, SC / Savannah, GA
area next week to see the sights, frolic in the surf, eat some good southern
cooking, etc. Since it looks like I-77 is the most likely way to get there
from Ohio, if'n I were to convince them that a stopover was in order somewhere
in the general vicinity of the AT where the interstate crosses, where might
you suggest would be a good place that we could park for the night, hike in to
stay at a shelter, and hike back out? My wife and daughter like to walk but
are not really hikers per se, and I'm the only one with a real backpack, so I
guess the hike shouldn't be more than half a dozen or so miles one way. Nice
views would be a real plus.
Thanks in advance.
