Well, one obvious place is Mount Rogers-it's south of where I 77 crosses the AT, but you can't beat it for scenery. You could park at Massey Gap & hike up to Thomas Knob shelter...

Just back from ten days of sailing on Lake Huron. It was great, thanks for asking. Oh, wait, you didn't, did you? That's okay, I won't bore you with stories about the cool water, nice breezes and incredible sunrises and sunsets.
But now the fambly wants to go down to the Charleston, SC / Savannah, GA area next week to see the sights, frolic in the surf, eat some good southern cooking, etc. Since it looks like I-77 is the most likely way to get there from Ohio, if'n I were to convince them that a stopover was in order somewhere in the general vicinity of the AT where the interstate crosses, where might you suggest would be a good place that we could park for the night, hike in to stay at a shelter, and hike back out? My wife and daughter like to walk but are not really hikers per se, and I'm the only one with a real backpack, so I guess the hike shouldn't be more than half a dozen or so miles one way. Nice views would be a real plus.
Thanks in advance.
