I really agree with the recent post about the gratuitous mention of the AT by the press. When I mention my upcoming through-hike attempt, a very common response is, "Isn't that the trail where all those people get murdered?" I even hear this from friends in places like the city of St Louis.
When I hiked in Glacier NP last summer, I heard the same thing, about the man-eating grizzlies. I just looked, and it's been a decade since the last fatal bear attack in Glacier. As we approached wolf country in Idaho, the locals told us we'd be "wolf shit" soon. To my great disappointment, I never saw a wolf on that trip.
It's good to know about real risks in certain areas and to plan for them, though.
