1.? some relatively?short, easy day hikes? (I need knee replacement
surgery, so the hikes can't have strenuous climbs)
There are some nice dayhikes on the east shore of Lake George,
Sleeping Beauty for one, that are pretty easy and have good views.
2.? any other "must do" ideas--great museums appreciated, great places
for a rental canoe/kayak paddle,?things like a wine tour or orchards,
etc.
The Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake! There are also some easy
dayhikes in this area - see the Northville-Placid Trail, especially on
the east
shore of Indian Lake.
3.? campgrounds that are nice and won't break the bank
Lake Durant State Park CG just outside Blue Mountain Lake.
The campgrounds around Lake George are really busy in the summer,
don't bet on being able
to get in on a weekend without a reservation. Weekdays not so bad if
you leave by Friday.
South Meadow, on the road into the Adirondack Loj outside Lake Placid,
free primitive, emphasis on primitive, camping. But you can drive
right up to most of the sites. Bring your own water.
Pit privies. Pay shower down the road at the Loj. Appoximately six
miles from Lake Placid, so easy to get in and out and
see things.
