I don't know about 15YO MREs but when I was in the Army we occasionally ate
20YO C-Rations. They were okay (meaning no one got sick or died) except for
the chocolate bars and cigarettes. The chocolate was very much like
cardboard and you didn't need to drag in the cigarettes to get them to light
and burn. They were so dry they'd have made good fire starters.
