Hi Gang,
For a Dalevile thru Dragons Tooth or to highway 42 hike.
I suggest leaving a car at the Daleville park and ride. Thats just a
parking lot that is in sight of highway 81/ 220 and any of the motels.
Also there is a connector trail from the parking lot to the AT which is
just up the hill behind the motel a few hundred feet. There is an area
of conifers on the left just before the RR tracks that you can set up a
tent and camp out of site.
There are some local shuttlers, The ATC site lists some I believe. I
live 100 miles away but frequent the area. Get a ride out to your
starting point on highway 42. If you wish to begin at Dragons Tooth then
there is a Dragons Tooth parking lot on highway 311 a few miles north of
where the AT crosses 311. A connector trail leads up to the Tooth and
the AT. Walk north back to Daleville.
This Trail Angel has shuttled me on snowy winter days. Once
he shuttled me from the bus depot in Roanoke out to Daleville. I hiked
from Daleville south to Atkins (southern highway 81 crossing), grabbed a
cab to Marion and a buss bike to Roanoke. I spent my second xmas in the
Rendavouse Motel in Pearisburg along the way. This is a good hike for
someone who might fly in to Roanoke.
