The Ice is out of most lakes in NH. The last remnants on Crystal
Lake melted on Monday. Almost immediately three loons showed up on
the lake. Spring peepers began to sing just a couple of days ago.
We have had several days of temps in the 60's and 70's so most of the
snow is finally gone at lower elevations. Above 4,000 it will be a
long time before the trails will be snow and ice free. We haven't
had rain in 12 days so everything is very dry and lots of brush fire
have been occurring. The most spectacular fire happened across the
lake from my house on Mount Major. Thirty acres of forest land
burned over a couple of days. We could see the smoke and helicopters
dropping water on the flames from our front porch. The fire seems to
be out now. Hopefully the hiking trails on Mount Major will be open
again.
