I found the original article (from the Bland paper, April 15th, 08).  Its 
actually a pretty well written article, and points out connections to local 
trails, benefits to local businesses, funding from a variety of sources 
including grants.  Not sure what got the editorial writers so hot and 
bothered.
An interesting statistic: it was pointed out that there are 56 miles of the 
AT in Bland County, the most in any county in Virginia.
