Hit the trail

By JULIE E. GREENE julieg at herald-mail.com

One of the most beautiful times of the year to hike the Appalachian
National Scenic Trail is approaching as autumn colors begin to appear.

The images on this page are from the Maryland portion of the trail, which
runs along the ridge of South Mountain from the Potomac River to the
Pennsylvania border and is approximately 40.5 miles long.

David Reus, recreation project coordinator for the trail, said 3 million
to 4 million people a year use the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail, which
runs from Maine to Georgia. Reus said a pilot study was done this past
summer to get a better idea of how many people visit the trail. The
results of the study, which focused on the trail from Northern Virginia
into Pennsylvania, should be out this winter.

The Herald-Mail invites readers to share their Appalachian Trail photos
for an online slide show at www.herald-mail.com.

The photos should show the beauty and ruggedness of the trail experience,
and they should not be posed or digitally manipulated. Include a brief
description of where and when the picture was shot, and your name and
town. Submit by e-mail only to: photo at herald-mail.com; put "Appalachian
Trail" in the subject line.
