Hiking in the cold on rainy and dark evenings will guarantee you  solitude.  
I predict that you will meet nary a person in the shelters along  the way.  
Get some reflective tape and stick it on before you venture to  the roads for 
hitchin' a ride.  Better yet, cut up that tape to make words  requesting a ride. 
 Words like:  "Please Stop!"  or "Help" or  "I'll tell you a story for a 
ride!"  Or some other catchy phrase.
