Carole,
I started on March 4th and there were indeed several staring the same
date. It was cold, 11 degrees, but still several others too and it
did fill up the shelter at Springer. It did not take more than a
week or so for the crowds to thin out and it was not a problem for
me. Since I had not hiked much before, I decided to do only 7 miles a
day until I got into trail shape which put me at shelters early and
space was not problem.
Its going to be cold, no matter where you start that time of year,
but its going to be colder the further north you start (brilliant
statement huh?).
There are fewer hikers starting each year since 2001 according to
stats from ATC. See http://tinyurl.com/9u7fd for the page about this.
I'd bite the bullet and deal with the crowds for a short while. ATC
has a "When to Start" at http://tinyurl.com/246ruk
Good Luck
