Direct mail (junk mail). I could write a book on that too. It is a
Problem much worse that bingo cards in magazines. When I last drove a
truck, ONE postal substation in LA received an average of ten semi loads
(45,000 lbs each) on a daily basis in 1990. That's almost 54,000 TONS a
year! That's a LOT of garbage/litter/trees/fuel/carbon.

Well, look at it this way: People eat vegetables. The growers grow more
vegetables the next year and then people eat that as well. Will it ever stop?
Probably not as it provides nutrition to the populace. Think of the trees
used to produce paper as vegetables. They grow, get used and then the tree
farmers grow some more. It provides work for people so that they can feed their
families, purchase things from stores so that those who work in stores can
feed and clothe and house their families, and the economic life of the nation
continues. Think of all those little cards (probably printed on recyclable
paper) as instruments to stimulate the economy. Why would you want to block
economic progress? Because a couple of cards fell out of the magazine and
cause "ahgitta"? Let the little things go. Enjoy the magazine. Don't pick it
up if it bothers you. And don't forget to eat your vegetables.

Oh, it you bring a couple of those cards with you on the AT then you can use
them to start a fire around which others can warm themselves and join in on
the chatter that makes walking the trail meaningful to some.
