AT lemming here...

Yeah, I've done the March 17/18th start date twice now. But, if you're
willing to camp and want some solitude, you can still find it on the trail,
even in prime thruhiker season. On my thruhike, I was a shelter rat and
stayed in shelters every opportunity I could. On my week long anniversary
hike two years later, I spent a couple of nights in shelters but was usually
sorry and preferred the nights I spent in my tent - well, except for the
night I got kicked with my own boot (see link).

But, beggars can't be choosers and with the timing working out for moving
out of my apartment, returning a borrowed minivan, and visiting friends
along the way before getting a ride to Georgia, I'm getting on the trail
perhaps a bit earlier than I would have preferred. So, I'll bring some
warmer clothes, be open to spending an extra night in town if a storm or
severe cold front comes through, and otherwise, spring will be a great time
to be hiking the southern portion of the Appalachian Trail.

Even my shoulder continues to make big progress so I don't anticipate any
problems with that on the trail - except maybe while trying to sleep. I
still can't sleep on my left side - ARGH!
