Lurker:
You are soooooooo right about the new culture of the Boy Scouts. You would not BELIEVE the bureaucratic BS I've had to go through to offer my "outdoor merit badge program" -- camping, hiking, backpacking and wilderness survival: Permission slips, tour permits, medical forms, youth protection training, two deep leadership (3 if we go more than ten feet from our church sponsor's building), vehicle and driver information, travel packets for each driver, etc. etc. etc. And none of that has anything to do with the four merit badges. I really don't know how I put up with it all, but I think it has something to do with my vision of getting about 18 kids into the backcountry where they can appreciate all that nature has to offer, and do it safely and with growing confidence in their own abilities. I can only hope that, somehow, my efforts will make a difference in their lives somewhere down the road.
thanks for your comments!
cheers,
Longhaul

Right, I also understand that. As I said, my response was mostly tongue
in cheek. However, it is also true that making the boys do anything
they don't want to do is now considered to be harassment. As an
example, the boys are no longer allowed to require that one of their own
sing a song to get their lost and found back. Harassment. Some good
and some bad at the same time.
As Forrest Gump said, I've said enough about that.
