Black Diamond trekking poles are good, but I wouldn't call them bomb proof.
I have a pair of Terra CF trekking
poles<http://www.bdel.com/gear/terra_cf.php>.
About 6 weeks ago one snapped in half on a descent of Big Cataloochee Mtn.
in GSMNP. But I shipped them to BD, and in a just a week they were repaired
and returned.
I also don't find them too heavy because they're nicely balanced. The center
section is carbon fiber, which absorbs some of the shock without the need
for a spring-loaded mechanism.
