Oh...this is priceless, Ken. You don't know me very well, do you?  :-)  
I'll duct tape the things to my legs before I do all that!

The update on this part...and, this is in reply to Mara, too...I was 
just going to take them apart to look at what is going on, and the 
danged things are working right!!! So, I may have had my most recent 
problem because of the cold. When I say I 'hand tighten' them, I mean I 
tighten the nut down, which then spreads the plastic thing farther 
apart...which then puts pressure against the outer tube. (I thnk that's 
what suppost to happen).  So, I'll leave well-enough alone for now. Or, 
put them outside next time it's cold and see what hapns then.  Thanks 
for your input(s).  And, whoever wants to sew these gaiters up for 
me...let me know when you'll be here and I'll make coffee. (Oh, by the 
way, the hardwood floors are done in the livingroom!!!)  (Marsha...you 
readin' this?)
