[at-l] Bear kills boy sleeping with family in large tent

All I know is that screaming "Get Away Bear" twice, as loud as I can and as
deep a voice as I could muster up worked with the one bear that was about a
foot away from my tent.  He was sniffing and snorting.  My wife and I were
about 4 miles North of Neals Gap and it was somewhere in the 3:30am
timeframe late August 2005.  She hasn't been backpacking since and I keep
dreaming of bears just outside my tent each of the times I have been since.
That bear got in my head pretty bad.

When I was on the train to Georgia I sat with a nurse from Connecticut who  
was heading to Georgia also, and I told her of my dream to hike the AT.
She 
asked me, "What about the bears?"  I said that I would talk to them if  they

got too close.  Then she asked "Do you know their  language?"   I replied
that 
the sound of the human voice was strange  to them and they would realize I
was 
not food.    Hmmm., I  wonder?  Well, I am glad I didn't have to test my 
theory.
