[at-l] New Park to Stretch from GA to KY

You may have to wait awhile, Skeeter. About four years ago I asked a couple
Cumberland Trail Conference people when they thought the trail would be
completed. Their estimate then was a hopeful 2008.

A couple months ago I asked the same question. With a shake of the head, I
was told maybe 2014.

Another point to make about that story: The headline writer seems to have a
short memory. The headline reads "New park to stretch from Ga. to Ky.," but
that's old news, like 5- to 6-year-old news. The decision to make it a state
park was made during the Don Sundquist administration.

It turns out, those two things (the delay in finishing the trail and the
conversion to a state park) are related, at least according to the former
CTC executive director, Paul Freeman. He told me the state was slow to
secure land for the trail, which was beginning to hamper trail construction.

But I'm glad to say my 17-year-old son at least did his part to help finish
the trail. About a month ago he completed an Eagle Scout project, which was
a couple sets of steps and signs at a trailhead in Scott County. So when you
do finally get a chance to hike the trail, Skeeter, be sure to check them
out!
