The Neusiok Trail is nearby, http://www.clis.com/canoe2/neusioktrail.html and you can always take North Carolina's Mountain to Sea Trail http://www.ncmst.org/ until it intersects the AT at Clingman's Dome.

And to tie this to a different thread, starting at the sea gives you a chance to get in better shape by the time you hit the mountains. :-)

Well having grown up in Va Beach, I'm pretty familiar with all the joys of living near the ocean :)

I was just saying I'll be much closer to the AT than I am here - 6.5 hours is nothing for a drive :) And I was of course wondering if there were other listers in the area that might be driving towards the woods now and then :)
