[at-l] Room for improvement

Tesnate Gap also kicked my backside, but I don't think anything south of Vermont really compares with some of the climbs from there to Katahdin. One that I thought was the worst was Mahoosuc Arm. Everyone talks about what a challenge the notch is, but I followed the advice in the book to treat it as the world's largest jungle gym and that worked for me. Then I started up the arm and it just about killed me. Yet I don't recall anyone else complaining about the arm in their journals, or any warnings in the guide book. Always seemed strange to me...

Tesnate Gap was the *worst*. Argh. Straight up the side of the (bad word)
mountain. There was a guy on a huge motorcycle idling in the little parking
area at the bottom, and he had Elvis singing 'The Battle Hymn of the
Republic' on his radio as we climbed. Surreal.

I remember meeting another hiker who said that Sassafras Mtn was the worst
climb ever, and so we dreaded Sassafras for a day or two. Then we climbed
it, and it wasn't hard at all.

So I totally agree that there are lots of factors that influence how hard a
particular climb will feel on any given day.
