Birding. Lots of birds, great location for fall and spring migrants, as well
as winter waterfowl.
Kayaking. Terrific opportunities for small human-powered boats (okay, you
can use a canoe if you want).
Marshes. I love a good marsh, salt or fresh. Swamps, ditto. Start at
Merchant's Millpond, you can rent a canoe.
Beaches. Your choice of developed or empty. You can stand on the beach on
Ocracoke Island in mid-July, turn 360 degrees, and not see a single person.
Being stuck in the Piedmont makes me miss the coastal plain even more.
