[at-l] Measuring Wheels

The NYNJTC has been measuring trails with wheels for more than 50 years. One
of our archival objects is an early wheel made from a bicycle wheel. We have
one with steel pegs that is good in the snow and ice, but a pain in fall
leaves as it picks them all up.

A gal out in Washington State, Bette Filley, did that. She was sure that
the generally regarded distances were incorrect, so she grabbed her kids and
a measuring wheel and did a check on the trails of Mount Rainier. She wrote
the definitive book on the mountain, published about 12-yrs. ago, and still
on the shelves of your neighborhood book seller, or on the web at Alibris
and Amazon.

Read recently that a part of the AT was measure thusly too.
Can't remember the source though.
