I was out hiking yesterday, leading a group of 14 scouts and adults on a winter hike as part of a merit badge program I'm doing (Hiking, camping, backpacking and wilderness survival). It was the first of five ten mile hikes, so we did it on level ground along the Washington and Old Dominion Railway trail in Northern Virginia. Temperature when we started at 8:30 am was 18 degrees with wind gusts to 30 mph. The scouts saw numerous birds, including a couple of hawks, and a red fox, which they thought was cool. They also learned about "layering", and how to dress for cold weather so as not to freeze their patooties off. Everyone said they had a great time and can't wait to do it again.
I'll be doing it again today with another four who couldn't make it yesterday. Life is good.
cheers,
longhaul

Maybe everyone is out hiking, freezing their patooties off?
