Good luck.

Speaking of luck, ever hear the good luck wish, "Break a Leg"?

Well I wouldn't recommend it, but that's how I quit smoking. A few years back
I broke my leg. So, I quit smoking.

You see, back in the '80s I had promised my wife that I'd not smoke in the
part of the house with central air/heat where the smoke would circulate. She
had had a stroke and I was trying to support her plan to quit -- even if I
wasn't ready to stop, myself.

I had a small shop/study that wasn't on the central air-handler system. It had
its own heat and a window air conditioner. So, it wasn't a big deal. When I
retired and we moved back to Virginia, I rigged another "man cave" to smoke
in.

Then shortly before Christmas in '03 I broke my leg. No way to get down into
the basement to smoke. The weather was too bad to be stand around on
crutches outside too smoke. And a promise to someone.... Well you know what
I mean. I wanted to keep it.

When I could finally get around, six weeks later, I decided that if I had not
smoked that long I'd see if I could hold off a bit longer.

Four years later, I'm still holding off a bit longer. I'm not saying I've
QUIT. I'm just holding off starting back for a while. Its not easy, but been
doable, so far.

So figuratively, "break a leg" -- a.k.a. good luck.

Chainsaw

BTW -- Are you the typical "problem solving" man from Mars?

I am. So, I keep the "cave" and "the makings", at the ready. That way I
focus on the "hold off a bit longer" -- not on solving a problem there being
nothing in the house to smoke.

Some folk have to clear out the source of the temptation.

But I know myself. If there is some reason/problem/blockage/etc that I can't
do what I "want to do", then I need to solve that "problem." OTOH, if there
is nothing to stop me doing what I want, then there of only the question of
what I really "want" to do.

To make this somewhat trail related, "I put one foot in front of the other and
repeat -- because that's what "I" want to do.

As always, YMMV.

And the New Year's resolution? Why, to do more hiking this year of course!

I may try to quit smoking again. If I hike more miles than this year (1000)
, I'll be thrilled.
