This is about the funniest post I've read on this subject.  It's a tad bit like dancin' on a grave but not really.  Maybe it's more like getting in the last laugh or the last word.

It's like watching a free-for-all in an old western saloon in the movies.  I'm not sure if the pain is from laughing or from crying.  Alas, the human condition.

OrangeBug posted his description of it on WhiteBlaze.

Well, Ryan did say it was a "dead" hard drive so you'd have to pay some big
ucks to retrieve them. That would lower the value a bit unless of course,
t just gives you a warm feeling knowing that the posts are in there
omewhere and this is *the HD* they were originally posted to.

Yeah, and then there's Ryan's offer of his old 1996 hard drive with WF
posts. That's gotta be worth thousands…

Did you check out "the official patch for Wingfoot's 1987 Golden
Anniversary Expedition, which served as the centerpiece of the Appalachian
 Trail's 50th anniversary national celebration". Only $500 each folks.Orfor
nly $150 you can have 2 National Geographic magazines with articles
about the AT, the second of which "was published to coincide with Wingfoot's
1987 thru-hike to celebrate the A.T.'s 50th anniversary of completion of
the A.T." That's coincide as in coincidence, mere coincidence.

Wingfoot is mentioned once late in the article as being one of a group of
thru-hikers the author encountered. No mention is made in the article of his
"historic" hike, just his trail name along with Ramblin' Rose, Sourdough Bob
and Hobbit (not to mention many other hikers mentioned throughout the
article). Perhaps the author didn't realize that WF's hike was " the
centerpiece of the Appalachian Trail's 50th anniversary national
celebration" and that all the other hikers on the trail that year were
 incidental.

What's sad about this is that apparently he truly believes himself to be
an important figure in AT history. I have no doubt that he loves (loved?)
the AT and is/was passionate about preserving it but he can't seem to
separate his need for personal celebrity from what he wants for the AT.
Consequently his efforts take on more of the appearance of
self-aggrandizement than of service to the AT.

As ever, I'm just so impressed with the man's lack of ego ;)
I think I'll throw myself a party...commemorating something or other.
 Gifts and cash welcome...

Those are quite the prices. $125 for a used copy of the "Philosopher's
Guide"? I have one I bought for $8. Of course mine wasn't "used by
 WingFoot".
