OK, so, last Thanksgiving, I carefully counted up the
"long distance hiking" miles of the boys, including
where we'd been on the AT and LT, and came up with a
figure of 1,006 miles of original trail (i.e., not
double counting some small parts here and there). If I
take 278 miles off of that for the LT, then add back
110 for the southern LT/AT, I get 838 miles of AT, or
38.5% of the 2,175 mile AT for them. (Hey, cool!)

But two winters, I hiked on the AT alone, and if I
added running from Troutdale->Damascus into the mix,
I'd get

 838 MA/VT-> Katahdin + NOC->HotSprings"+"   w/boys
 +41 VA603->Damascus           run 2-3 times
+121 Damascus->Erwin           Xmas'02
+163 Fontana->Springer         Xmas'04
- 29 Fontana->NOC      (counted with boys' 838 miles)
---------------------------
1134 miles, or 52% of the AT!!!

So I'm halfway done with a section hike of the AT!
WOW!

OK, so, maybe I figured this out last winter, and it
didn't excite me much, or maybe I need to go get that
second cup of coffee this morning, but I just kinda
get a kick out of being a 52% sectioneer this morning.
I pat myself on my figurative back.

sloetoe
GA->ME class of 1979
Sectioneer class of 20??

(But now the question: how much should I hike/rehike
with/without my sons????? Do I involve them in the
hiking miles race? Do I hike *only* the AT with them?
Do we *not* get to rehike any "favorite" AT/LT
sections because we want to burn new miles??? Pooh.)
