In case this info hasn't already appeared on the list:
PLEASE JOIN us for the KEYNOTE ADDRESS as we LAUNCH the APPALACHIAN TRAIL
MEGA-TRANSECT
Friday, November 10th
National Conservation Training Center, Shepherdstown, WV
With much excitement, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), National
Park Service (NPS), United States Geological Survey, and USDA Forest
Service invite you to attend the launch of Exploring the Appalachian Trail
as an Environmental Mega-Transect: a Working Symposium.
7:00 The long walk and the art of Megatransecting: The Appalachian Trail
Mega-Transect (Byrd Auditorium, NCTC)
Mike Fay is an ecologist with the Wildlife Conservation Society and
Explorer-in-Residence with National Geographic. Introductions will be
provided by Roger Moore, Stewardship Council and Board of Directors, ATC,
and Mike Soukup, National Park Service Associate Director, Natural
Resource Stewardship and Science.
As you will see from the attached program overview, our goals are
ambitious. Since its founding over 80 years ago, the Appalachian Trail has
been a landmark in conservation innovation, characterized by novelty in
its design and implementation, achieved through collaborative efforts
along the Trails 2,175-mile length and across political boundaries. We
believe the Trail now has additional contributions to make, using its
iconic status to serve as a transect to chronicle the health of the
Appalachian Mountains, to anchor land-protection efforts across Eastern
Forests, and to enhance the sense of place in Trail communities and in the
Appalachian Mountain region.
We are eager for you to be a part of the early development of this
exciting concept and we hope you can join us Friday evening.
