Tried it in 1997 (I don't suppose the road has
improved any since then) in a 1985 Volve 240 wagon.
The car has better ground clearance than many 4x4s,
and has a great collection of skid-plate type pieces
underneath (just say Yes!" to unibody construction),
and had *me* at the wheel (the guy who's piloted
cars/motorcycles into the strangest of places). Still,
we turned around, about two miles up.
Actually, come to think of it, there WAS no
turnaround. So I had to back alllllll the way down the
"road". The kids were just 3 at the time, and if not
thrilled with the ride up, they thought the ride back
down, with the bumping and jarring over rocks, Daddy's
grimacing face twisted around to them, working the
steering wheel in reverse, giving blow-by-blow
commentary on every rut and boulder, was just *way*
too much fun.
At the bottom were my soon-to-be-X-inlaws, insulted
that they had to wait while we checked whether the
road was passable for their car. Hoo boy.
