         I saw on TV somewhere that the African bees develop faster in the 
larval stage beating out the domestic species in hatching. These future African 
queens birth faster therefore allowing them to set up faster and kill off 
their later-hatching rivals. 

          They truck in hives down here to service the citrus blossoms.

    
                A queen or new second queen will fly away from the hive to 
seek a new colony. A large group of regular bees will follow this queen and 
surround it to protect it. They are very docile in this state and can be handled 
as their instinct tells them to swarm the queen. We once had a big beard of 
honey bees hanging from a branch on our beech tree in the back yard.
