[at-l] thru-hike equipment

Hi Sarah,

You don't need any more equipment to do a thruhike than you did to do a
three-week hike. The only exception would be if all your hiking to date has
been in warm, mid-summer conditions. In that case, you may want to consider
warmer sleeping bags, and/or warmer clothing or an extra layer.

If your boyfriend is still gearing up and/or you're reconsidering some of
your own gear, familiarize yourself with the concept of lightweight
backpacking. In general, lightweight gear costs no more than its heavier
counterpart but your bodies will like you better at the end of each day.
There's nothing extreme about lightweight options though some of the
ultra-lightweight crowd do go a bit extreme for my taste.

If you have specific questions, post them here and you'll usually get at
least as many opinions as responses.

I've been participating on this list for eight years and started compiling
many of my thoughts on my web site. There's everything from my AT gear list
(which I would not use again) to my lightweight gear list (which I would use
for an AT hike) to all sorts of other gear discussions, tips and tricks,
lightweight philosophy and manufacturers list, and more. It might be worth
perusing.

Hope this helps,
