### Rather than go with a list of items, I would
suggest going the Colin Fletcher route, and go with
functions first, then see what you might want. If you
go with a list of "items" alone, I think it promotes
carrying something without knowing/remembering why.
(I just found an old post for you...)

For what it's worth, probably half of my walking
calories come from GORP. My basic mix is cashews,
raisons, M&Ms, Reece's Pieces, craisons; and then
sometimes banana chips, apple chips, pineapple chunks,
and all that other stuff that comes up. GORP has a
hugely good caloric density (read "fat calories"), as
well as sodium (cashews), potassium (raisons),
sugars-for instant burst (M&Ms), and more complex
carbohydrates to float you for awhile. My second
favorite food ingrediant is SlimFast (or Instant Bs or
whatever), because of the concentration of nutrients.
FWIW, though, SlimFast itself is handy as well, in
colder weather because it has a boatload of fiber (as
do raisons), which promotes, shall we say,
"expeditious" poops -- nothing is worse than hanging
your butt in the wind for longer than necessary.
OK, well, there's my tips for the day.
