Though for most spoiled Americans, privies pose aesthetic problems, a privy is probably the cheapest and most environmentally friendly device ever invented for disposing of human body wastes. Wastes are confined in a hole where they gradually decompose into a harmless soil conditioner and fertiilizer.

Consider the alternative used almost universally except along trails. Body wastes are mixed with drinking water and dumped into rivers, streams and ocean waters.
