On the contrary, it is the recent loss of people's suspicion
of power -- which I'd considered to far too low even
before the September 11th atrocities -- that has led to
the current state of national affairs.

For all the urgency I hear from people telling me that
"something must be done...now!" about global warming,
don’t you find it curious that these same people appear
disinclined to describe with any seriousness or precision
what that "something" is? Instead of such proposals, we
get trivialities like "50 simple things," or the Kyoto sideshow,
or hand-waviness about sticking it to corporations and
the rich. Are they naive, dishonest, or do they merely
see global warming arguments as a convenient means
to another end -- like noting the presence of a rare flower
to block the construction of a dam?

If the consequences of continued global warming are
as dire as is claimed, and a by-product of our modern,
affluent society, then it's reasonable to surmise that any
political action sufficient to address it will directly and
significantly affect everyone's lifestyle in the future --
perhaps much as if global warming were left unchecked.
It will take a global, authoritarian, top-down remodeling of
industrial civilization to something more "sustainable." I
think it is perfectly rational to question the motives of
those advocating action against a problem whose solution
would require the transfer of so much power.

*You* may be the trusting sort, but I would no sooner
write a blank check on my liberty to the likes of Al Gore
and the self-serving power-fetishists at the United Nations
to fight a Global War on Warming than I would to George
Bush so that he may combat terrorism; something which
pales in scope compared to altering the earth's climate.

Keep in mind that I am stipulating to the existence of
global warming and that, for purposes of this discussion,
it is man-made to a large degree. Whatever arguments
you may have in reply to mine, “that I am in denial” shall
not be one of them.
