Don't spend much time on the trail north of Niday Shelter. However, I have
seen a number of bears and lots of bear sign on the AT south of there. I
haven't sighted one yet this year, but have seen lots of scat. It's the first
time I haven't had a number of sighting by now in my segment south of
Pearisburg.
They are no problem as hunting and the lack of free handouts from car tourist
keeps them rather people wary. I expect that the southern end of Catawba to
Rockfish is about the same.
Last time I hiked the James River area there were lots of sign and I had one
sighting. There, like to the south, the sightings are of them heading away.
The lack of hunting in the SNP and other "Park" land makes the a bit more
"acclimated" than those you will find as you move south. Ditto, handouts and
garbage to raid.
Not to worry, however. Even along the Parkway you should do just fine with
good camp hygiene and bearbaging.

Subject: [at-l] bears in central VA
What's the scoop on bear activity in central Virginia? I'm planning on
making my annual section hike from Rockfish Gap to Catawba or
thereabouts. If bears are active in the area, do the shelters have bear
poles or the equivalent, or should I just plan on hanging my food?
