Notes to the CDT-L mailing list, spring 2006These are the notes I mailed to the CDT-L National Scenic Trails mailing list (at www.backcountry.net) during my road and hiking trip in the spring of 2006. I've added this page for the information which may proved useful to future hikers. April 25, 26 and May 3, 4, 18, 19.Tuesday, April 25 – Silver CitySubject : RE: [cdt-l] Internet resources in NM?? Hi there, I don't have a list, but can tell you that Lordsburg has a library with internet access. It's about two blocks east of the main drag through town on 3rd St. The staff there does not have control over their own filter though and I wasn't able to access my hotmail while there yesterday. gmail worked fine though. I think that was an anomoly but you may still want to be prepared. The visitor's center in town (I think 2 miles west) also has access but I didn't get there to check it out. In Silver City, the public library (west a few blocks on College from route 90) has internet access. I'm here now. They limit access to one hour though. I will likely check out the college campus computer center. I understand there's unlimited access there. That would be a few blocks further west of route 90 in the building at the end of College St. That's all I know as of now. I hiked from the border with Jim and Ginny but am off the trail for a few days with a skin problem related to the sun, most likely but not a sunburn. I hope to rejoin Jim and Ginny when they get to Silver City if my skin clears up within the next couple of days. Anyone know if there are any other hikers hanging out in Silver City this week? Mara Subject : RE: [cdt-l] Internet resources in NM?? (more specifics on the college campus) OK, I'm at the college now and they seem to allow unlimited access to their computers. It looks like you can plug in your own devices (the guy sitting next to me is doing just that), etc. The hours during the academic years are generally 8 to 6:00pm but after the academic year, they'll be back to 4:30. Call 505-538-6400 to check for evening hours or weekend hours. To find them, look for the Acedemic Resource Center in the Juan Chacon Building. They welcome community members, not just students though academics supposedly have priority. It's probably a non-issue with 20 computers available. There's no sign-in or anything. Just sit down and use them. The drawback... I think the college campus is at the other end of town from the main hotel drag that hikers are likely to stay in. I'm staying in the Historic downtown area so it's a little closer for me. The upside... for less than $6, you can get an AYCE lunch on campus. Burgers made to order, a small variety of surprisingly good pizza, something else hot (today was fish), a sandwich (cold cuts) bar, a small salad bar (no iceberg lettuce), beverages, cookies, fruit, etc. Definitely worth it for a hungry hiker. Mara P.S. The public library really did kick me off their computers after only one hour - even though nobody else was waiting. Only one hour per day per person is allowed. P.P.S. Locals have pointed me to two great food places in the historic area so far... Jalisco's Cafe, and Alotto Gelato. Both were good. Wednesday, April 26 – Silver CitySubject : RE: [cdt-l] Internet resources in NM?? (Silver City info) Found more internet resources in Silver City... On route 90, there's a sign shop named SPS that also has an internet terminal free of charge. They just don't want anyone spending hours there but it could be good for a quick email check. I souldn't plan on transcribing journal entries there. There may not be much space to spread stuff out though so plan on leaving packs outside. The name brand hotels also have internet access... Well, at least the Econolodge does in their lobby. The others advertise it though I'm not sure if they have terminals or just offer a connection for your own computer. Wednesday, May 3 - Gila to AlbuquerqueHi all, Ginny found a camera tangled in the manzanita on Tadpole Ridge on the CDT. It's a digital and there are pictures of Corinne and group on it. Jim and Ginny are continuing their hike and I've decided to go do something else with the next couple of months. So given that Gila Hot Springs had no outgoing mail, I've taken the camera in the hopes of returning it to the owner. If anyone can get this message to anyone in that group, please have them send me an email with a few specifics about the camera, and a couple of options for where to send it by which dates, and I'll try to mail it back. Thursday, May 4 - AlbuquerqueSubject : Re: [cdt-l] Camera found on CDT Yes, there was a place to mail letters, but mailing packages requires a whole different level of service. Weighing, packaging, differing rates for different services, etc. No suprise if he doesn't want to go there. That said, I don't think we asked because we all knew I would be heading back to my car and could get to a post office. Plus, we don't know who owns the camera and where they would want it sent. Anyway, the day we were there, Doc's water situation was a problem and we could get neither showers nor laundry. Argh! But, I'm back in ABQ now, showered and wearing COTTON clothing. Aaaahhh! Mara
>From: "Brett" Subject : [cdt-l] An almost Chama report...
After finding them in a pub, I spent the night with Homebrew and Greg at the edge of Carson National Forest. They'll be doing the pub crawl from Ghost Ranch to Chama and should be here in Chama tomorrow. ;-}
I still have Homebrew's camera but this time, I've got the address to mail it to.
Seems like there might still be more hikers here in Chama - wonder if I'll meet up with them.
When I get better internet access (one with a chair, perhaps?), I'll sit down and get a list (south to north, I hope) of Colorado thruhiker towns on the chance I'll be passing through when other hikers are around. FWIW, the internet access in the library here in Chama is supposed to be out for a couple of weeks. The Visitor's Center has a terminal that you can stand and use for 15 minutes or until someone else wants to get on-line.
On the road....

Subject : [cdt-l] Chama update
Quick update... After my last message from the Chama Info center, I went north and ran into 8 more hikers. Blister Sister and Packrat, G.I.Jane and Chuckwagon (and pup), Leprechaun and Laura (on bicycles). Blister Sister and Packrat were just heading out so I gave them a ride up to Cumbres Pass (they had done Cumbres to Chama the day before). Along the way, we ran into Simply Seeking and Joyce.
I dropped Blister Sister and Packrat and went back for Simply's and Joyce's packs. Brought the packs up to the pass and waited with them until the owners caught up. They took a break and had lunch at the train station as a nasty storm was blowing through (thunder, lightning, rain, etc.). Hope Blister and Packrat were OK out on the trail.
OK, so what is it with all the New Hampshire people on the trail this year? I think there's a bunch in the Andiamo crowd, Blister, Simply, Joyce, Homebrew. Lot's of them.
Back in town, I caught up with Leprechaun who I had hiked with on the PCT in '03. He and Laura who rode there on bicycles had just bought land in town. Maybe by next year (or maybe later this year), it'll be nice to have trail angels in Chama.
Stopped by to say 'bye' to GIJ and Chuckwagon. They're taking a couple of days off to let their husky's paws recuperate.
Well, I'm west of the trail for now, likely to be crossing it at least one more time in Colorado. Perhaps more? We'll have to see. I keep finding interesting ways to delay my progress to interesting sites. So, no complaints.
'nuff for now...
Mara
